SNA Scholarship

SNA Scholarship Information:

Every winter semester, the BYU Student Nurses Association rewards exemplary SNA members for their involvement in SNA activities and professional development. Applications will open March 1st and will close March 31st. Scholarship amounts will range from $200 to $500 depending on the number of applicants and money available as determined by the SNA treasurer.

To apply you must:

  1. Be a member of BYU SNA.
  2. Must not be a member of the BYU SNA board. (This rule applies to you if you have been on the SNA board from Fall-Winter of the current school year, however if you were JUST elected in February, the month before the scholarship opened, you are still allowed to apply!)
  3. Report number of SNA activities attended in the school year.
  4. Write a 1-page essay elaborating on your involvement in any professional nursing development, involvement in the community, and why you feel you should receive an SNA scholarship.

On March 1st, the link to the application will be posted. Winners are chosen based on a point system. Points are awarded for: Attendance to BYU SNA Activities of the current school year, professional nursing development, and the 1-page written essay.

The National Student Nurses Association also offers scholarships. Visit here to learn more about the scholarships they offer and how to apply.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:

1. Who can apply for SNA Scholarships?

You must be a member of BYU SNA to apply. Members of the SNA board are not allowed to apply.

2. Will my GPA affect my application to this scholarship?

No. BYU SNA will not be able to access the GPA of any scholarship applicant.

3. When and how do I need to submit my application?

The application will be available on March 1st and closes March 31st. Attach your application to an email with the subject “Scholarship application” to byusna@gmail.com

4. Why should I apply? There are many nursing students more qualified than me.

In the 2018-2019 school year, only six people applied for the five $500 scholarships offered by BYU SNA! Though this does not occur every year, we highly suggest you apply. Your chances may be better than you think!

5. What is “professional development”?

This includes but is not limited to: participation in research with a professor, being an SNA peer mentor, attending or presenting research at a conference, any nursing related community service and/or other activities that you believe have helped you in your professional development as a nurse.

6. I became a first semester student in the winter semester, so I did not attend any SNA activities in the fall. How will that affect me?

BYU SNA understands that students entering the program in the winter semester likely did not attend SNA activities in the fall. This will be taken into consideration in the judging process.

7. I doubt I will remember which activities I attended throughout the school year. Is there anyone I can ask?

The application will include a list of SNA activities of the school year to help you remember what activities you attended. The BYU SNA Membership Director also keeps attendance of all SNA activities and can be reached by emailing byusna@gmail.com

8. When will I find out if I am awarded a scholarship?

Scholarship winners are announced at the BYU SNA Closing Social in April. Attendance to this activity is not required to receive the scholarship. Scholarship money will be awarded to your BYU Financial center account.

9. If I attend an activity in March, does that count towards the number of activities I report?

Yes. You may include any SNA activities you attended before March 31st of the current school year in your application.

Please email byusna@gmail.com for any other questions.
